Check if the Touchpad is Disabled
Look for a dedicated touchpad key on your keyboard (often a key with a touchpad icon, usually F7, F8, or similar).
Press the key, often with the Fn key, to toggle the touchpad on/off.
Alternatively, check your touchpad settings:
Windows: Settings > Devices > Touchpad
Mac: System Preferences > Trackpad
Restart Your Computer
Restarting can resolve temporary glitches.
If it works after restarting, the issue was likely software-related.
Check for External Devices
If a mouse or other pointing device is connected, the touchpad might be disabled automatically.
Disconnect any USB devices and check if the touchpad starts working.
Update or Reinstall Touchpad Drivers
Windows:
Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
Expand the "Mice and other pointing devices" section.
Right-click your touchpad driver and choose Update Driver or Uninstall Driver.
Restart your computer to reinstall the driver automatically.
Mac: Ensure your macOS is up to date.
Check Touchpad Settings
Windows:
Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad and ensure it's enabled.
Check sensitivity and gesture settings to ensure they’re configured properly.
Mac:
Go to System Preferences > Trackpad and check gestures and settings.
Boot Into Safe Mode
Boot into Safe Mode to determine if third-party software or drivers are causing the issue.
If the touchpad works in Safe Mode, uninstall any recent software or updates that might be interfering.
Run a Hardware Diagnostic
Many laptops have built-in diagnostics. Check your manufacturer's website or boot menu for a diagnostic option.
This can confirm if there’s a hardware issue with the touchpad.
Check for Physical Damage
Inspect the touchpad for visible damage or debris that might be obstructing its operation.
Clean the touchpad with a soft cloth.
Reset Your Laptop’s BIOS/UEFI
Access the BIOS/UEFI during startup (usually by pressing F2, Del, or another key).
Check if the touchpad is disabled in BIOS settings.
Reset BIOS settings to default if necessary.
Seek Professional Help
If none of the above works, the issue may be hardware-related. Contact the manufacturer or a professional repair service.
